The Wisdom of Man versus the infinite God

It's amazing to see how science has figured out all the wonders of the Universe, and placed them right there for us to view on the wide screen TV.
From the birth of galaxies, to the very nature and properties of Light,
We certainly seem to have made great strides in man's knowledge and wisdom.
The big bang theory, the ideas of time travel through "wormholes," the evolution of species and the very idea that we can measure the width or depth of the galaxy and our universe of which we are, admittedly, such a small part, had become the educational stimulation for generations of scientists. I sit there dumbfounded until I scarce can take all the man-made explanations of things that we are only beginning to believe we can understand, yet the commentator with the Australian or English accent sounds so smug, so secure in his explanation of the cosmos we inhabit; how could he ever be wrong?

The one thing he has forgotten is the existence of the One true God, the Creator of all this wonder that we think we are beginning to understand and explain. "Oh," you say, "what makes you think we should believe THAT old superstitious explanation of our beginning, when we have all of man's wisdom and the scientific explanation of all things in the world around us." Well, I might tend to agree with you except for one thing . . . That Creator God, the One who began it all, cared enough and LOVED enough to send his Son in the form of a man. That man was prophesied and foretold for generations and he was born in a manger in Bethlehem to Jewish parents, just as was prophesied. The historical record of his life on earth is greater than for almost any human who has ever lived, yet many deny His existence and His role in the very creation of the planet we inhabit. The fact that he died and then conquered death so that no one need to live without hope is also considered quite the fairy tale in our time. The REAL truth for you is, what do you believe? Faith is simply stepping beyond the evidence of the truth, and claiming that Truth for your own.

In this 21st century of our timeline on this earth, even the Church, the "bride of Christ" spoken of in the Holy, inerrant scriptures, is falling away from the truth of the Gospel and it's proclamation to those who need to accept His mercy. Preachers no longer proclaim and tell forth the Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ. They have become enamored with their own words, the poetry of the language and the comfort of their position. Even more deadly, the Christians who have already received the Good News, those who have the greatest hope of the ages, who have an assured future far beyond death have ceased telling the message of salvation and rescue from certain destruction.

It is all there, you know . . . It's found in the Holy Bible, that Word of truth that holds the REAL secrets of the ages . . . The ones that truly affect YOU and your future long beyond the time you spend on this earth. It is fascinating to study science, as long as you don't allow it to answer questions that only the One, true God who loves you can provide . . . If you have questions, please don't hesitate to email me. I love photography and yes, I will get back to more about it on this blog, but I still feel the need to speak the truth to those who have ears to hear.

Full Moon Summer Nights, when the weather is "JUST right" . . .

Ok, I know it is almost 1:30 am, and I have been up since just after Midnight, but I can't help it . . . I love a full-moon summer night like this one! It causes me to wake up & enjoy the evening petting my wandering beagle, who has been tied up because he won't stay home.

It also causes me to dream . . . and to be thankful, and yes, even to worship my Creator, the one true God. The last first . . . I praise God because the gift of his Son, Jesus Christ, the Son of God and Son of Man, The only perfect sacrifice for our sins BECAUSE he is both fully God and fully man; yes He who was with God at the beginning of time and was the agent of creation! This triune God I serve has my whole life in my hands, and truly the whole WORLD . . . I am so glad for this, when I see the death, destruction, and decay of this world, earth, and our universe. I know it was not created to last forever, and we were promised it would "pass away" in the end times, yet is sad to watch how mankind is destroying this earth with his greed and the weight of SIN itself. There is NOT a safer place than "in the arms" of my everlasting God.

Next, I am thankful for all that I have: all that I have been entrusted with on this earth, both material and spiritual. I know I have not "done enough" with it. I will work on this and seek God's guidance for the rest of my days. I was watching the full moon over my little "Studio-in-the-Woods," and am amazed at what I have here. This little studio is the third one I have built, and it is the best I have ever had. I love living in this "oasis in the woods," my nice home next to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. It is totally isolated, yet so close to everything we need here at the Lake of the Ozarks. Tonight, I can hear the cicadas and the owls and enjoy the light of the moon illuminating everything around me in a much different and awesome way than during the day.

Thirdly, to speak of the dreams. I dream of so many things, most of them selfish and self serving, I admit. I dream of owning a condo or townhouse in Florida and in Durango, Colorado, for our retirement years. Of course, that is several years away. I also want to continue my photography business, creating portraits of such a high quality and of such individual, almost "trademark" significance, that more people will desire them, enough to pay my "higher prices." YES, it is true . . . I am not the cheapest, nor do I have a desire to be. I think I have spoke of this before: I am NOT going to lower my prices any more . . . They are now at the level I charged back before the turn of the century, around 1998 . . . I can't help it if all these "Newbies" have come in without a clue and changed the expectations of the consumer . . . REMEMBER, you often "get what you pay for" in life. I'm sure they know what they are worth. Oops, didn't mean to digress . . . I also dream of using new technology in my portrait business . . . Some COOL stuff that will enable the consumer to portably view each image as they "appear" . . . but I'm still researching this. As a final thought on photographic dreams, I dream of building my Scenic and Landscape photograph to the point that I am selling more images on canvas of beautiful "moments in time" I have captured. I sell these images, primarily on canvas, signed and numbered, and guarantee them to last 100+ years in your home or business. I need to put more on line, but you can view my "Scenic visions" at goodwinphoto.biz. I have always been told I have a "different way of seeing" . . . I hope you can capture my vision.

And as a final note to the "dream" portion of my life, my vision goes well beyond my own selfish dreams for success and the future . . . I also am capturing a "greater vision" for my life, that specifically includes my service to mankind, and my treasures which I need to "lay up" in Heaven. YES, Heaven and hell are BOTH real places, and you have already chosen which you will inhabit . . . If you don't know my savior, this Jesus whom I serve . . . If you don't know FOR CERTAIN where you will go when your life ends on this earth, call me or text me or email me OR speak with another follower of Jesus (and NO, don't be led astray by cults such as Jehovah's witnesses or people of the Mormon faith . . . they DO NOT hold true to the Word of God, and are in need of God's saving grace as well). There is only ONE way to Heaven, and that is through faith in Jesus Christ as the only begotten Son of God; the One who is also equal to God in all ways, who was there in the presence of God at the beginning of time.

This blog is becoming more than photography, as you can see. If I offend you, I am sorry . . . The condition of your soul is more important than your opinion of me and my little, insignificant blog. Make YOUR life count in all that is good, in the time you have on this earth, and secure your future in eternity. I see a lost and dying world all around me . . . both the people of earth, and the earth itself. This world (specifically the people in it who are unredeemed in their sin) is a hopeless, sick mess. I now have two jobs, and am inspired by my pastor at 2nd Baptist Church in Lebanon. I serve there as Minister of Music part time, as well as spending my days seeking to perfect my craft of photography. I wish you only the best of life, and pray for your salvation in Christ.

May God bless and grant you beauty in all things. I wish you only the best of things, both in life and photography. Remember my tag line . . . "Where Photography becomes A Work of Art."

Facebook, Twitter, & Blog(s), "Oh My."

Just some news for those of you who are "fans," or want to keep up with what I am doing, both business and personal. I am now "working my way" into Twitter. My twitter ID is @photo4art, if you want to follow me. It was originally designed to promote photography (specifically my scenic images) as an art form, but it has turned a bit more personal as of late. I hope to get more photography content posted in the coming months.

Speaking of my scenic images, you can find "most of them" at my secure sales site at Zenfolio. It is easier to send you to http://goodwinphoto.biz, and then it will re-direct you to the other address. I currently have a 20x40 canvas of the Ha Ha Tonka castle on display at the Park visitor's center, and some others slated to be displayed in the Lake of the Ozarks area.

Although I have been a portrait photographer for over 22 years (with many more to come), my dream is to eventually "retire" with my wife & continue my love of landscape & scenic photography as we travel around America. Also, I can't believe what "passes for" salable scenic images on line these days. Once again, you get what you pay for, it seems! And, as I've said before, "If you can't see the difference, don't pay for it." (No, I haven't raised my prices in over 12 years!?!). Oh, and one more thing . . . I am a very picky person, and my own worst critic. I rarely like my own "stuff" anyway! So don't worry about offending me if you don't like something I do . . . That's what our guarantee is all about, (see http://www.goodwinphoto.com - Opening page), and it proves another "old adage" as well . . . "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Man, I am full of it today! . . . Oh, and we all are entitled to our own opinions, aren't we :)

Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. It is a diverse world, with plenty of room for all tastes and budgets. Concerning budgets and costs, it's sad, but the cost (to me) on my gallery wrapped canvas prints is really high . . . I've tried other suppliers, but the quality just isn't the same. I believe it is worth it to hang something truly beautiful on your wall that you know will last for 100+ years. Give me a call if you want to stop by and take a look: (573) 873-6353.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Blog!

Anticipating the ocean drive AND the beach ;)

The drive continues on day 2 of our vacation to Florida. Sunshine and clouds as we head south on 231. I sure wish there was a better route to Florida than through Dothan, AL and all the stop and go traffic.

Really looking to some photography and relaxation on the beach! When I get my new software installed & new background set up, I will be able to take photographs of clients and magically place them on the beach or in the mountains, or near a waterfall . . . Cool stuff!

THAT is one good excuse to travel and photograph incredible scenery, right?

I'm bored

Where in the heck is "Bay, AR?"

I'll give you a hint: it is extremely flat, and not too far from Jonesboro, then Memphis, TN . . . Lots of soybeans, rice paddies, and corn.

On the road today . . .

It looks like a long day of driving ahead. Google says it will be just under 10 hours . . I'm thinking we need to add at least 1 to arrive at the Marriott. Speaking of Google, it took us south from Lebanon on 5 to O road, then right on TT, then H, then 95 south. That sure is some pretty country, especially those Ozark "mountains" that crest to give one a "birds eye view" of some BEAUTIFUL scenery! Note to self: make the same drive this fall to check out the scenery. I'm sure the layers of colors will add a lot of depth to the image before me!

Something you may not know about digital photographs . . .

I have looked at and worked on a million digital images in the last 11 years (it seems like that many), and I've NEVER seen a really good digital image "straight out of the camera." I may see one tomorrow, and perhaps you believe in your camera that much, but I'm from Missouri . . . You'll have to SHOW me!

The point is, every image needs some post processing to look it's best. I recommend running some sort of noise ware for reducing digital noise, especially for environmental images. Also, some sharpening is ALWAYS a good idea - Unsharp mask in Photoshop is a standard procedure for most professionals. Finally, if it is portraits you are viewing, they will benefit from a skin softening or smoothing step added in. It takes some extra time and effort to make a digital image look it's best.

Those days when one could simply "lick and stick" that roll of film, send it to the lab, and get back amazing beautiful prints are gone. The tools for quality control is in your hands now . . . Be sure you know how to use them!

Summer = Savings on family portraits

If you have been stalling or procrastinating on getting your family portrait done, this summer is the time to do it.  If you will look at 100's of restaurants, attractions, and other locations at the Lake of the Ozarks, take note of these rack cards populating the racks there.  Pick up one and bring it in with you to your session, and SAVE $50 on your family portrait this summer!

"Lucky 22" ~OR, My Biggest Celebration give-away ever!

22 years ago, in May of 1989, I paid my $600 bond for my sales tax ID with the State of Missouri, got all the proper local permits and licenses, paid my rent and deposit, and opened my first photography studio in St Robert, MO. Wow, was I naive! Times were tough getting started, and within 2 years, I had met the Love of my Life, gotten married, bought a home, and built my first studio (I HATE rent). I was busy photographing weddings, families, and high school seniors mainly, but also babies and pets, especially dogs and horses. I was the contract school dance and graduation photographer for Waynesville High School, and paid off all my loans for the building and my Hasselblad cameras. By the year 2000, change was in the air. By 2001, I had moved to digital capture, and starting with Fuji S2's, through Nikon D-70 & D200's, I finally got sick of Nikon refusing to offer full frame, so I sold all my Nikon equipment and upgraded to Canon 5D with full frame with all the clarity and resolution I had only dreamed of. I have stalled on upgrading from there, as there is a diminishing return the more pixels you cram on a sensor.

Somewhere in there, we moved, built another studio in Laclede county, and moved back to my childhood home. Within 5 years, my wife had accepted a position as vice-principal with the Camdenton R-III school district, so we relocated to Camden county, right next to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. This is it; I am HOME. We love the Lake of the Ozarks, the Camdenton schools, and living here with a state park LITERALLY as my back yard. I still have a REAL photography studio; "Lights (backgrounds), Camera, Action" and all that good stuff! However, this is the LAST one I will build.

Being a perfectionist, I have found some real issues with digital on very large family groups of 25 or more. I could spend $18 - $25,000.00 on a medium format digital camera . . . ? OR, I could just get the "studio standard" medium format FILM camera, the Mamiya RB-67 Professional-S all manual camera and solve all my "perfection issues" at once! After all, I KNOW HOW to use a film camera, and use it well! So, I now have the Mamiya camera with three lenses, all set to give that "retro film" look that is SO desirable . . . Take my challenge and see if you can tell the difference between 6x7 cm medium format film and full frame 35mm digital capture. If you are really a purist, I even have a lab on the West coast that will do the final printing OPTICALLY on your family portrait!

I know we are NOT for everyone. We are not cheap but we do offer a level of service and GUARANTEED satisfaction without any hassle that is extremely difficult to find anywhere else. We have the finest equipment for capture, manipulation, and archival purposes. We also offer high resolution scanning of slides, negatives (up to 6x9cm), & prints, as well as restoration and preservation services. I am a PPA certified professional, and we offer outdoor, lake, and urban photography on location.

Be on the watch for special "$100 bills" floating around the community. Past loyal custtomers will receive some, and will be encouraged to "pass them on" if they aren't using them. All told, I will be GIVING AWAY $10,000 worth of professional services to celebrate 22 full years in business! There will also be a limited number of FREE sessions for the first few seniors who call and book early!

It only seems like yesterday, but then I remember it all . . . What a ride!

When I Grow Up . . .

Photography was never my chosen profession . . . "It" chose me, so to speak. I have truly enjoyed the creative aspect, the ability to make my clients cry (tears of joy, of course :), and the financial rewards for the past 22 years THIS MONTH. Wow, how time has flown. I got to say it again . . . I opened my 1st studio in May of 1989. I have never been without a physical, "brick and mortar" location in 22 years, except for a short stint "borrowing" a friend's studio while building my own. I have rented in two locations, renovated a building for my third, and completed totally new construction for the last two. I am the proudest of my current location next to Ha Ha Tonka State Park -- I've learned a few things through the years! I believe there is NO SUBSTITUTE for great studio photography -- The control I can achieve for my finished product is awesome. I love the outdoor stuff, both urban and pastoral, but the studio offers something most of the other "photographers" can't duplicate.

Keep watching this Blog for my 22 year anniversary specials!

My Mind's Eye

The wonder and enjoyment of a child fills my mind's Eye as I look upon the beauty of God's creation. The long, drab, dreary winter is over as the hardwood forest takes on the green haze of Spring's great awakening. The buds are opening even as the flowering Dogwoods and Redbud trees bask in their short-lived reign before the full canopy of oak leaves enshrouds them. The sunny days and spring rains are working their magic. The Morels are popping up to the morning thunder of wild turkey Gobblers echoing their newfound dominance to the glades and hollows of the Ozark hills. The Crappie are quick to find the hook and fill the angler's stringer as the whole earth seems to celebrate the rebirth and new beginning that Spring brings.

. . . NOW, if I can just find the right scene to capture and portray this on canvas! My mind's eye is not bound by time or space or even f-stops or ccd's . . . Perhaps the human mind IS the ultimate canvas!

Don't you just love Change?!

Ummm, I really don't like change, usually.  But then again, my wife says I take about two weeks to decide if I like the "new furniture arrangement." Ha!

However, some change (unlike the political "hope & change" we got in 2008) CAN BE good.  I am looking forward to offering some new services for my clients that will be unique among my many competitors, and set me apart from the ever-growing crowd of "wanna-be" photographers.  I am always looking for a better way to serve my clients; to offer something beyond the current trends in photography.  Quality, Service, and an Un-matched guarantee have always been my hallmarks, and they will continue.  I am also looking forward to adding some more reasons to choose Images By Doug Goodwin as your photographer of choice!  Keep watching this blog, as well as the front page of my main website (http://goodwinphoto.com) for updates and exciting new offerings.

Until then, enjoy the beautiful warmer weather coming our way.  AND, don't forget the wonderful Dogwood trees that will be blooming here in a matter of days.  They can make a beautiful addition to the scenic aspect of YOUR family portrait!

Thanks for listening! -- Doug

p.s. - Here is the new rack card that will be going out to potential new clients, and will be available in the community here at the Lake of the Ozarks.  No you can't print one from here for the $50 discount, but you can contact me as to where to get YOUR discount on a family portrait!

Rock & Roll photographer

Bryan Adams . . Do you remember him as a "rock star"? Well, he is 51 now, still plays about 120 music gigs a year, but is also now in great demand as a photographer, including the queen of England. I saw him on Sunday Morning, and I must say his old songs like "Cuts Like a Knife" were MUCH better than his BROAD LIT portraits. Portraits should portray the subject in the most flattering way possible, NOT as wide as possible. It seems NO ONE can see how bad photographers are now "honored" . . . No one cares . . Rembrandt is turning over in his grave.

The future looks bright!

It looks like I won't be leading a photography class, at least not starting this month. I haven't gotten enough people interested in the Tuesday evening class I proposed. HOWEVER, if YOU would be interested in a comprehensive, portraiture oriented and business-focused class on photography, drop me a line. I would consider it in the future.

Speaking of the future, I am SO excited about 2011 for "IBDG" (Images By Doug Goodwin). I have some awesome ideas, improvements, and big plans for this year . . . Stay tuned!

Photography . . . CHANGE is eminent: the future for this "Young-er" photographer

The first of the year is traditionally the time to plan, evaluate, and make adjustments in your "business plan" if you are a photographer. It is usually a slower time in business, and a time to re-evaluate equipment & perform maintenance, update software, and re-do pricing and brochures. It is also the best time to plan expense budgets, make forecasts, and chart your course for the coming year . . . YUCK!, especially on all the paperwork. Who was it that said "I just want to take pictures!" Well, I can sympathize, for I would much rather be involved in the "Act of Creation" rather than all the paperwork. HOWEVER, if you are really a professional photographer, you had better be in this for the money . . . Otherwise, what is the point!?!? I really get SICK of all those "so called" professionals who just "LOVE, Love, love photography (said with a sickening tone of infatuation)." Give me a break! Let's GROW UP and turn our infatuation into a commitment to quality and lose the amateur attitude; let's learn the business of photography!

With all this advice I'm giving, I realize it is time I made some major changes in my business practices. I am going to be re-working all my pricing practices and making them reflect the amount of time and talent involved in what I do. After all, it is not the photographic paper nor even the canvas that REALLY holds the value, it is my time and artistic interpretation that SHOULD determine value for the consumer. I am also re-vamping my "on line" posting of images. I will still post images on line for my customers, but the galleries will expire within two to three weeks, and there will be BIG discounts for ordering within 5 days, a lessor discount for 10 days. Also, there is a premium paid for on line posting-- it is simpler just to come to the studio and order! If you haven't placed your order within a few weeks, you lose your session fee and all payments, plus the images are GONE forever. This is just about good business practices, not because I am a mean guy ;).

Another ingrained practice I am looking at changing is the sale of digital files to the consumer. I have historically shied away from this, but I recall an experience which has caused me to revise my opinions. I have a very good friend who is a professional photographer. Several years back, he asked my wife and I to model for him as he was seeking some prints to enter in competition. We readily agreed, and spent an afternoon traveling around, taking various romantic, non-traditional poses. We went in to view the images, and I am sure he was hoping to sell us some prints. However, we were pretty young, were just volunteering to help him out, and had no budget for the beautiful images he showed us. A few years later, I asked him about the negatives for these images, because I didn't want to lose these to history. Guess what? He had already disposed of them, not even calling me to ask if I wanted them. Ok . . . Now I am convicted . . . How many times have I done something similar? No more . . . I am going to find a way to offer my files to customers who will truly treasure them. This won't necessarily satisfy those looking for a "cheap buy" on the files, but the customer who either purchases a sizable package & wants to add files, or the customer who just wants to purchase files . . . Either should pay approximately the same amount and will receive an "archive-able" DVD they can place in their bank vault to be sure that their treasured images are preserved forever.

About the "young" photographer mentioned, you are only as young as you feel, and I have SO much to offer in experience, knowledge, service and product QUALITY. As a result, I feel I am truly in the "prime" of my photographic life! I look forward to the future and all the images to come. Give us a try and see if we can't redefine your opinion of AWESOME! Change is GOOD . . . I will not necessarily be more expensive, just making sure the bills are paid :)

End of Days . . Life beyond photography

I watched the movie "2012" today . . . A quotable line from the movie is "Who would have believed that the 'Nut-cases' with the signs were right?" We definitely live in an interesting time in history. According to the movie and Nostradamus and the Mayans and the Egyptians, the Hopi, and maybe the Freemasons, 12-21-2012 will be the end, or the beginning of the "end of days." The History Channel also portrays a dire picture of the end of days, citing the above and other references throughout human history, including the Bible, in discussion of this cataclysmic and apocalyptic turn of events. This Galactic Alignment, which happens every 26,000 years will happen on 12-21-2012. The consensus seems to be, "get ready, because it's coming . . . And there's nothing you can do about it." Tsunamis, super volcanoes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters are eminent, and mankind will face mass death and maybe extinction . . . Well, it MAY happen . . . Are you ready? How would you face extreme change and the certainty of your own death? Do you have a Hope which extends beyond this life?

I am so thankful that the Creator of this universe holds my life and this world in His hands. It really is a matter of faith . . . There is no 21st century scientific proof that the Bible is true, but there are more historical proof texts in existence for the scriptures contained within the Bible than for any book in human history. I am thankful that I met my Savior, Jesus Christ, at the young age of 7 years, when my child-like faith enabled me to trust in His love unconditionally. If you don't have a personal, intimate relationship with the Creator of this world through His Son, Jesus Christ, call me or drop me a line . . . I'll be glad to introduce the two of you!

Fine Art Images placed on Canvas Wraps

Here are some images that are off at the Lab being printed to canvas, and quite a few are destined for some of the businesses at the Lake of the Ozarks where they will be featured.  I'm really excited to see them finally arrive, hopefully the first of next week.  As soon as they are on display, I will post on here and let you know where you can go view some of these fine art pieces.  All will be signed and numbered, and sales will be limited to a first come, first serve basis.  All of the pieces which I print to canvas are guaranteed to last at least 100 years without fading or changing, as long as they are not in direct, unfiltered sunlight.  Call me if you are interested in hanging some of my artwork in your home or business!

Oh, and the colored borders on some of the prints are there because I felt the composition of the image was complete and could not be wrapped on the edge, hence the colored wrap which extends around the edge of the stretcher frame.  Each stretcher is 1 1/2 inches deep, unless you request the extra deep wrap of 2 1/2 inches.  Either way, the resulting image has a depth and "painterly" feel that is just not available on a standard print.  You may view scenic images and fine art images at http://goodwinphoto.biz, but you must order the signed, limited edition gallery wraps directly through me.  You can reach me on my cell phone @ 573-745-1125, or I will be glad to reply to texts as well.

Photography Class

I'm thinking I would like to "host" a photography class for 4 Tuesday evenings in a row, starting mid-March. Sessions would last about 2 hours each, & would cover everything from f-stops and digital slr's to lighting, composition, & the business of photography. I said "host," because I expect to learn as well as teach. I will teach & facilitate learning, but bring your ideas and questions to the table . . . All skill levels will be welcome. One of my mantras about my photography is "always learning; never satisfied." Leave your ego at home. We will also schedule a couple of "photo expeditions" on a few weekends, with one hike taking place on the trails of Ha Ha Tonka.

A few conditions will apply if this is going to happen: a minimum of 5 participants and a maximum of 10 will need to sign up; the cost will be $200 per participant (totally guaranteed, & call me if this is a problem); PLUS you must be committed to the time involved if you sign up. I promise you that NO ONE who takes this class seriously will EVER look @ photography the same ever again! Seriously, if you love photography (and you don't think U know it all already), this could very well change your life. If I do this, it will be done right.

The main thing I need from you at this point is your email, text, phone call or Facebook message stating your interest in this class. I won't commit to the time and preparation required unless at there are enough people.

You may reach me at one of the contact points listed at this site: http://ibdg.tel

Thanks, and stay warm . . . Spring is just around the corner!!!
